Coming Soon: Content Warnings for Moonshine

Coming Soon: Content Warnings for Moonshine

Happiest and newest of years! Now, Moonshine is less than a month to publication, so I don’t need to tell you that you can still pre-order Moonshine or (for reviewers) request the digital ARC on NetGalley, right? No, of course not. You already know that, because you’re smart and well-informed.

What might be new information is that I’m currently working on writing up a list of content warnings for Moonshine. I’m hoping to get it posted by next week, but this kind of thing does take a while to thoroughly assemble (and Moonshine is about twice as long as A Study of Fiber and Demons, and that one took me quite a bit of time as it was). If you’re a reviewer or a reader just eager to know what to expect before you get your hands on it on release day, and you need particular warnings before then, please feel free to reach out to me on Twitter or via my shiny new contact form here on the site. I’m happy to spoil things (privately) for the sake of letting folks make the decisions they need to about approaching my books. I can also add warnings to the list after it’s posted, as I’m sure there will be elements in need of warning that I didn’t consider the first time around and, obviously, I can’t account for everything with this kind of thing.

In the meantime, I’ve also added an Upcoming Events page! (I tried adding a proper calendar, but WordPress outsmarted me on that one, *shake fist*). Keep an eye there for, well, upcoming events. There will be more added soon.

A Festive Winter Update

A Festive Winter Update

It’s actually not festive at all, only some updates and reminders! Let’s just get right into it!

There will be more updates soon–I’ve been busy with grad school the past few weeks, but I’m through finals now. Over December I’ll have a lot more time to throw together some more fun updates, but for now, I wanted to keep everyone up to date on the basics.

A Link to the Future (when my book comes out)

A Link to the Future (when my book comes out)

Hope you all like links, because I’ve just updated Moonshine’s page to include a bunch of pre-order links, including the option to pre-order the ebook directly from Angry Robot. If you’re more of a paper and ink kind of reader, I would personally recommend pre-ordering from my local bookstore, Powell’s. Can’t be assed to go to Moonshine’s page to see all the options? Don’t worry, I’ve pasted them here, too:

Paperback [PRE-ORDER]: Powell’s | Amazon | B&N

In other news (well, more of a reminder), I have a book signing at University Bookstore in Seattle on February 10, 2018. Until then, I’ll be working on an events page for this site so you can look up any upcoming Moonshine shenanigans without having to rely on me sporadically telling you, because that’s not an ideal system. For now, here are the important details you’ll need if you want to plan a visit to see me in Seattle in February:

A Very Spooky Autumn Update

A Very Spooky Autumn Update

Well, as predicted, it’s been a busy fall for me. Here’s what’s been going on:

  • Copyedits for Moonshine have come and gone. With the book shifting ever closer to its Final Form, I imagine things are going to start heating up on the marketing and publicity end of things for Moonshine, so I should have a lot more to share with you soon.
  • My first term in grad school is going well, though it seems all of my anxiety about feeling overwhelmed was fully justified. But I’m staying on top of my work for now, and with my copyedits already out of the way, that takes a bit of the weight off.
  • I have an Instagram now! Finally, a way to inject desaturated Fall Aesthetic directly into my bloodstream. And so much less existentially crushing than Twitter…
  • I’m making progress on my cosplays for Kumoricon, with Taako and pajama-themed Terra Branford essentially finished, and Edward (also from The Adventure Zone) close to done.
  • Speaking of Kumoricon, I will be there! Specifically, I will be a panelist on the LGBTQ+ Gaymes and Gaymers panel, and I’ll be talking about Final Fantasy IX’s Quina and neopronouns. If you’ll be at Kumoricon on Friday October 27th, please stop by! Still waiting to hear if I got into cosplay chess, too…

Aside from that, I’ve been spending my spare moments playing FFXII Zodiac Age and Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! (the two greatest games of 2017, and that’s just a fact), and working on the sequel for Moonshine, though of course I took a break from that when I was working on the copyedits. I should be able to really lock down on writing for a while now, but it’ll be a tight fit between midterms and conventions and holidays… ugh. When was the last time I had a vacation again?

More updates on Moonshine, end of summer plans, etc.

More updates on Moonshine, end of summer plans, etc.

Hello again, here’s another summer update!

Finally, I’m in the home stretch with my edits for Moonshine, so I’ll be finishing those this weekend and returning to drafting the second Moonshine book. And hopefully titling it because boy would I love to have something to call it.

Announcement: Moonshine is coming February 2018 from Angry Robot

Announcement: Moonshine is coming February 2018 from Angry Robot

The word is out! I can now officially talk about my BIG NEWS that I’ve been sitting on for a while now, which is that Moonshine (previously known as Moonshiners) is going to be published by Angry Robot! You can read the official announcement at the Barnes & Noble Sci-fi & Fantasy Blog.

This whole turnabout started last April, when I pitched Moonshine as a part of #DVPit, a Twitter pitch event organized by Beth Phelan of the Bent Agency (thank you, Beth!), which was meant as an opportunity for agents and editors to connect to querying marginalized authors who write about marginalized characters. I pitched Moonshine as a queer fantasy there, where the pitch was liked by Mike Underwood at Angry Robot. From there, I sent him my query and sample pages, and he requested the full manuscript a few weeks later. A couple months after that, I heard back on Angry Robot’s final decision, which was that they wanted to offer me publication for Moonshine and an option for a sequel. (Maybe you’ve heard that I recently got started working on the sequel, too? That’s why.)

This is all great news, except, uh-oh, I didn’t have an agent! I didn’t technically need one in order to contract with them, but it wouldn’t have been an ideal situation (I don’t exactly have the publishing clout or experience to negotiate contract terms on my lonesome). Luckily, Mike is an author himself and he’d been in that same position, so he had some great advice and recommendations for potential agents who had worked with Angry Robot before. Laura Zats with Red Sofa was one of those recommendations, and I queried her ASAP. She was quick to request the full manuscript, and shortly after, she made an offer of representation, which I accepted. Since then, she has been going to bat for me with contract negotiations, which were recently finalized and signed off on by myself and Angry Robot.

So, that’s where we’re at now! The release date for Moonshine is February 2018 in ebook and mass market paperback in the US and UK. I’m sure there will be a lot more news as things come along, so I’ll continue to update all of that here. Thank you again to Laura for all the work you’ve done representing Moonshine, Beth Phelan for organizing #DVPit, and Mike, Marc, Penny, and the rest of the Angry Robot team for this great opportunity and all of the support they’ve given me so far.

And I am so excited that I get to talk about it now. In fact, good luck getting me to shut up about it.

Small News on A Study of Fiber and Demons and (Secret) Project

Small News on A Study of Fiber and Demons and (Secret) Project

Two brief points of order!

  1. Less Than Three Press just let me know that A Study of Fiber and Demons has been scheduled for a release date of August 9th, 2017! The cover is still in progress, but I’m told that it will be ready soon and the pre-order page will be going up shortly on LT3’s book market, so I’ll be updating on all of that as it comes along.
  2. I can now tell you that my (Secret) Project should be un-secret sometime next week. I still don’t have the exact date, but rest assured I will be eagerly awaiting the go-ahead to lift my gag order and I will finally be able to talk about my big, big news.

That’s it for now! I should have much, much bigger updates very shortly, but in the meantime, mark your calendars for A Study of Fiber and Demons’ release on August 9th.

Writing Schedule (Secret) Update

Writing Schedule (Secret) Update

So, I’m still under gag order on my BIG NEWS, so I can’t actually say what landmark I just finished up with. Sorry. (Also, I know I said I was hoping to be able to announce my news “soon”, like, several weeks ago, but I still don’t have a date on when that gag order lifts. Sorry about that, too.) But I wanted to post something, because I know I’ve been pretty quiet with all the work I’m trying to get through. Which has not just been my secret top priority project or even my other writing projects, but also school and my day job. So between everything, I’m stretched a little thin on social media time these days.

Anyway, I did just finish up a (secret) landmark, so now I’m going to get back into drafting the Moonshiners sequel and hopefully some Hellslayer too, if I can make the time for it. But first I’m going to take a few days to just play video games, because between my (secret) project and A Study of Fiber and Demons, the past solid two months have been nothing but hard external deadlines for me and I need a break.
