The traditions of Chee’s people have withstood eons in their rigidity, but when Chee finds that she cannot live up to them after being rejected by a spirit of masculinity during a ceremonial coming-of-age quest, she is sent to a healer to undo the spirit’s curse of womanhood upon her. The old healer, however, acknowledges that she has nothing to cure about Chee’s identity, and instead pairs the young woman up with a man whose gender similarly appears to break the traditions of their people. Together, the two teach each other how to live their authentic genders in accordance to their people’s customs and guide each other to find a place where their ways of life and their true selves can coexist in harmony.
